Technology has changed almost every aspect of our lives—from how we work to our entertainment. Why should security be any different? At LiveView Technologies, we believe that security has evolved from traditional reactive measures to a live, proactive system. However, as technology has improved, the mindset about security has not. We identified four common security mistakes that are tied to the traditional security mentality and how to avoid them.

1. Take a covert, not an overt approach

There is a tendency to hide security systems. Some do it to actually hide the system, while others try to make the hardware more aesthetically pleasing. Either way, at LVT we view this as a mistake because people behave differently when they know someone is watching them. Of course, this includes the behavior of those intending to damage your property, but it also includes the behavior of your customers and employees.

The physical presence of LVT units can deter parking lot incidents. For example, one large retailer saw a decline of incidents by 40–70% after placing LVT units in their parking lots. Another customer struggled with incidents of violent crime on their property. In fact, they were the number one hotspot for the local police department. After placing a LVT unit in their lot, the customer saw such a dramatic decrease in crime that the police checked in with the customer to ensure they were okay and to see what they changed. In both examples, covert security lacked the benefit of deterrence, and once the clients switched to an overt option, they saw drastic results.

2. Paying humans to watch cameras all day

The days of relying only on monitor-watching-guards hidden in the back closet are over. Instead, let the technology watch for you by augmenting with the LVT solution. On the LVT Command Center, not only can you see live feed and move the cameras, but you can set specific alerts and notifications. That way when someone crosses the frame in a particular way or a car drives into view, you are alerted in real-time on your mobile device. Then you have the power to assess the threat and take necessary action.

3. No audio in parking lots

Part of the LVT solution is a two-way speaker. The speakers give you even more live interaction with those on your property and serve to deter threats, improve your lot’s safety, or create an atmosphere. You can address customers and employees directly as they go into your store, play recorded messages, or issue warnings. Some LVT clients use the speaker to broadcast messages about social distancing and mask wearing. Another used it to create a holiday atmosphere for their customers by playing Christmas music in their parking lot. Yet another used the speaker to play audio of barking dogs whenever someone triggered the unit’s alert.

Because it is a two-way speaker, you can greet employees as they come to work, ensuring they enter the building safely. Or you can talk to potential threats and warn them off your property. Since people behave differently when they are under surveillance, the addition of speakers increases this awareness in those on your property.

4. Running wires and bandwidth, tearing up your lot

Traditional security systems require you to tear up your property to run wires and bandwidth. This can take weeks to install properly, and once installed, you are tied to that system and its views. The D3 Mobile Security from LVT takes 30 minutes to install and does not require traditional wiring or bandwidth. Furthermore, the unit is completely mobile and can be moved or removed at any time. You can address your security needs without waiting on and paying for intense installation, and as those needs evolve, you can easily adjust the LVT unit to meet them.
